Prominent ear correction surgery, or otoplasty, is a common form of cosmetic facial plastic surgery performed under general anesthetic. This type of corrective surgery is used to amend protruding ears that protrude due to an overly developed conchal bowl, inadequate formation of the anti-helical, or a combination of the two. Some people have only one protruding ear, commonly referred to as ‘lop ear’, which can be aligned to match the other ear using prominent ear correction surgery.
What does an otoplasty involve?
This type of corrective ear surgery involves the use of sutures, surgical threads used to close wounds, to pin back the ears’ deep conchal bowl to the side of the patient’s head. A second set of sutures are then used to recreate the antihelical fold before the surgeon uses dissolvable threads to close the wound. A head bandage is then applied with the patient usually being able to return home the same day as the prominent ear correction surgery. The procedure typically lasts around an hour and a half and is performed under general anaesthetic.
How long does it take to recover from prominent ear correction surgery?
Patients who have undergone otoplasty surgery usually return to our surgery within three to five days for us to remove the head bandage and check to see how your earlobe is healing. Patients usually take a week off of work, and avoid exercise for three to four weeks after your surgery, avoiding strenuous exercise. After we check you over, you should be able to wash your hair and ears in the shower. It is important you wear a headband at night for up to six weeks to help protect your ears while you sleep. As the incision was made behind your ear, the scar from your corrective ear surgery will be barely visible.
